I’ve just been
involved in a motor vehicle accident, what do I need to do?
If you are involved in an accident:
- Stop
- If you can, move your vehicle off the road.
- Give aid to any injured people, but do not move them unless
necessary.
-
Send for the police, if necessary.
-
Get the names and address of all people involved in the accident,
any witnesses, and any injured persons.
Record the other driver’s:
- Name and address
- Driver’s license number and state of issue
- License plate number and state of issue
- Make, model and year of vehicle
- Damage to vehicle
- Insurance company name
- Names and addresses of passengers
Note the details of the accident such as date, time, exact location,
road conditions, speed of each vehicle, direction vehicles traveling,
and damage to any property. If the accident involves a parked vehicle or
damage to property, try to find the owner. If you cannot find the owner,
leave a note. The note should contain the same information as above and
the date and time of the accident. You should then immediately report
the accident to the police. You should also notify your insurance
company as soon as possible.
New Hampshire law requires that if anyone is killed or injured or if the
combined property damage totals more than $1000, you must file an
official accident report to the Division of Motor Vehicles in Concord
within 15 days. If the accident is investigated by a police officer, you
are not required to file a separate report.

CHINS
A CHINS (“child in need of services”) is a legal process that helps
address specific behavioral problems of children under the age of 18.
Specifically a child who is expressly found to:
- habitually, willfully, and without good and sufficient cause, be truant from school;
- habitually run away from home;
- repeatedly disregard the reasonable and lawful commands of his
parents; or
- place him or herself in unsafe circumstances.
A CHINS petition requires the parents/guardians and the child to appear
in court. A Juvenile Service Officer (JSO) may be assigned to the case
and may conduct an investigation. The judge considers all of the facts
presented to him concerning the child and then issues a final order that
is most appropriate for the child, the family and the public interest.
If you have any questions, or for more information and forms for filing
a CHINS, contact the police department or courthouse.
